  “Maybe just a quick flight tonight. If you sleep, it’ll be light before you know it.” The timing is all off, living both in New York and France, but it’s worth it—it’s the best of both worlds, for her and for me.

  She nods against my chest.

  Before we can shift and get to it, my phone buzzes in my pocket. I consider letting it go, but something nudges my brain to take a look.

  “It’s Niko,” I say with a frown.

  “What does he want?”

  “To talk—wants to visit.” I don’t like it. “Why don’t you go for a quick flight around the estate? I’ll see what he wants.”

  “You don’t want to come?”

  “No, you go ahead.”

  She shrugs off her clothes, and I step back to give her room. She shifts into her midnight black dragon form, as beautiful in that as she is when human, then she leaps into the air, spreading her wings and taking flight. She’s as dark as the night around her, so I quickly lose her as she glides on the air currents curling around the estate.

  I text Niko back. Come on over.

  He appears a moment later. “Hey, sorry to interrupt…” He looks around, but Jayda’s dragon is long gone.

  “What’s up?” I ask. Not to rush him or anything, but I only get Jayda during certain hours of the day.

  “Everything all right here?” Niko’s concern hikes up substantially.

  “Yes? Jayda will be back soon.” Now I’m concerned. “What is this about?”

  “You remember Jayda and Grace’s friend, Daisy? Well, she’s waking up.”

  My eyebrows lift. “I thought she was in a coma.”

  “She was.” Niko shakes his head. “Is? Maybe? Akkan’s by her side pretty much constantly. He says she’s talking, but she’s not awake.”

  “Talking in her sleep?” I’m not sure why that’s a huge concern—although I’m sure Jayda will be glad to hear about any progress with her friend.

  “More like a fever dream. It’s what she’s saying that’s concerning.” Niko shrugs, but it looks tense. “The shadow and the light. There can be no peace.”

  “If she’s feverish, why does it matter what she says?”

  Niko scowls. “She says they’re coming.”

  “Who?”

  “The Vardigah.” He winces. “She’s not awake, Ree. She’s not conscious. But she’s warning us.”

  I stare at him. It’s not enough to get concerned about. It’s hardly anything at all. But Niko’s led his lair for two hundred years and is almost solely responsible for the rescue of the soul mates from the Vardigah’s clutches—including Jayda. I brought her back, but he’s the one who made it happen. I trust his gut instinct on almost anything. And I can’t afford to take chances.

  “I’ll tell Jayda,” I say. “Maybe a visit will help bring Daisy back.”

  Niko clasps a hand to my shoulder. “Thank you, my brother.”

  My brother. It’s a common thing to say among dragons. There are so few of us left. But it’s never really felt right until now.

  Niko disappears, teleporting away from the dream-come-true I’m having with my one-and-only soul mate.

  The chill night air makes me shudder.

  Please don’t let this be anything, I send up a fervent prayer to the Universe. A cold and cruel Universe that’s never listened to my prayers before.

  Then I shift out of my clothes and into my dragon form and leap into the air.

  I need to find my mate and keep her safe.
